GEO for Restaurants: How to Appear in AI Recommendations

“A restaurant's decision cycle is minutes, not weeks: if the AI doesn't name you when a hungry customer asks, that reservation goes to whoever it does name.” — José Felipe Bello, founder of Bello GEO

When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best Colombian restaurant in Bogotá" or asks Perplexity "where to eat in Cartagena," the AI generates a list of recommendations. If your restaurant is not on it, you are losing customers who are already ready to book. Restaurants are one of the most-searched categories in AI engines — "best restaurant for…" is one of the most frequent queries in ChatGPT — and the AI cannot recommend what it does not know.

Why restaurants need GEO

A restaurant's decision cycle is short: the customer is hungry, asks, and decides in minutes. If the AI does not mention you at that moment, the opportunity is gone. Unlike industries where customers research for weeks, in restaurants an AI recommendation turns into a reservation within minutes.

Restaurant schema

The Restaurant schema type is your main weapon. It includes name, cuisine type, price range, hours, location, menu and ratings. Google and AI engines use this data to decide when to recommend you.

An optimized Google Business Profile

For restaurants, the Google Business Profile is arguably more important than the website. The AI reads your category, menu, photos, reviews and hours directly from Google Business. Having 50+ reviews with owner responses is a very strong authority signal.

A digital menu with schema

Your menu must live on your website as HTML — not as a PDF. Every dish needs a name, description, price and category. That lets the AI answer questions like "a restaurant serving bandeja paisa in Medellín for under 30,000 pesos."

Topical content

Create dedicated pages for every type of event you host (birthdays, corporate dinners, romantic evenings), every cuisine you serve, and every location if you have multiple venues. Topical depth tells the AI you are an authority in your culinary niche.

The review factor

AI reads reviews from Google, TripAdvisor and social media. More reviews mean more data for the AI to evaluate you with. Responding to every review shows the business is active and cares about its customers — that is E-E-A-T in action for the restaurant industry.

Where to start

At Bello GEO we measure overall AI visibility with the proprietary Bello GEO Visibility Index, a 0–100 metric across 8 dimensions: technical infrastructure, schema markup, content citability, E-E-A-T, AI-crawler access, cross-platform presence, topical depth and brand authority. It is our own methodology — not an industry standard or third-party endorsed metric — and AI citations are never guaranteed; the Index measures the conditions that make them more likely. Our founding case, Laboratorio del Dolor in Ibagué, Colombia, moved from 51 to 89 in six weeks of implementation (full disclosure: Bello GEO's founder is also co-founder and CTO of that clinic).
