How to Measure the ROI of Your GEO Investment
One of the questions we hear most often is: "How do I know GEO is actually working?" Unlike traditional SEO, where you can watch rankings and organic traffic, GEO requires different metrics and a broader measurement mindset. GEO ROI is not measured in web traffic alone — it is measured in citations, mentions, recommendations and, ultimately, in customers who arrived because an AI recommended you.
The metrics that matter in GEO
- Bello GEO Visibility Index: our own 0–100 metric of overall AI visibility (more on it below).
- AI citations: how often ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI use one of your pages as a source in an answer.
- AI mentions: how often the answer names your brand. Citations and mentions diverge sharply — a page can be cited as a source without the brand ever being named — so we track them separately, engine by engine, never as one blended number.
- AI-referred traffic: visits arriving from links cited inside AI answers.
- AI Overviews presence: whether you appear in Google's AI Overviews for your target questions.
- Rich results impressions: how often your schema markup surfaces as enriched results.
Measurement tools
Google Search Console shows impressions and clicks for rich results. For AI citations and mentions, we manually query ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI with your main keywords and log when and how you appear. Our GEO Monitoring service ($97/month) automates that tracking.
A realistic ROI calculation
If your GEO audit costs USD $1,500 (included at no extra cost if you move forward to implementation) and the improvements it drives bring you 5 clients worth $1,500 each, that is a 400% ROI. GEO also compounds: once an AI treats you as a trustworthy source, it keeps citing you at no additional cost.
Realistic expectations
First AI citations: 2–3 months after implementation. Meaningful AI-referred traffic: 4–6 months. A strong position in your niche: 6–12 months. GEO is a medium-term investment with growing returns — anyone promising instant AI visibility is overselling.
